Become a Aircraft Mechanic

July 3rd, 2009
U Urbano asked:

Aircraft mechanics are responsible for ensuring that planes are flying in top operating condition. They do this in a variety of ways: by performing scheduled maintenance, doing repairs, and conducting inspections as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Mechanics usually work in hangars although they are occasionally required to work outdoors. Ear protection is required due to noise and vibration when testing engines. There is frequent lifting of heavy objects and a good deal of awkward or precarious positioning required when working. Although a 40-hour work week is common, aircraft mechanics can frequently count on overtime and/or weekend work. The job can be somewhat stressful due to the high level of responsibility to maintain safety standards and the time pressure to meet flight schedules.

Education, Certification, Licensing

Due to the high degree of responsibility associated with the job, the FAA requires that all aircraft mechanics be certified. In order to become certified, a person needs 18 months of practical experience with either power plants or airframes; or (to earn a combined certification as both an airframe and a powerplant mechanic, known as an A&P certificate) 30 months of practical experience working on both at the same time. Completion of a program at an FAA-certified mechanic school can be substituted for the work experience requirement. Mechanics also must pass an exam for certification, which has a combination of written, oral, and practical test components. Once certified, mechanics must take at least 16 hours of training every two years to keep their certificate current. There are presently about 170 schools certified by the FAA. Coursework normally lasts from 18 to 24 months and the schools are required by law to offer students a minimum of 1,900 class hours. Many of these schools award 2-year and 4-year degrees in avionics, aviation technology, or aviation maintenance management. Courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, electronics, computer science, and mechanical drawing are helpful because knowledge of the principles taught in these subjects is often needed to make repairs. A strong background in electronics is especially important. Courses that develop writing skills are also valuable due to the fact that mechanics need to submit reports on the maintenance and repair work they perform. In addition to the educational and experience requirements, mechanics must be able to read, write, and understand English in order to become certified. Those who wish to work for an airline should also be aware that most airlines require their mechanics to have a high school diploma and an A&P certificate.

A Prologue to Mechanical Patents

July 2nd, 2009
Ash Tankha asked:

Mechanical engineering perhaps has the oldest known inventions and patents. In fact, the word ‘engineering’ is derived from a mechanical component. Mechanical engineering is a field that was conceived from natural laws of physics, where one engineers or manipulates these laws to his/her advantage. Mechanical patents non exhaustively and generally encompass utility tools invented constituting force, motion, mass, etc. It specifically encompasses all mechanical devices, contraption and interactions resulting in utilitarian instruments and apparatus, and where such interactions produce a action-reaction component that depends on the mechanism and nature of interaction. Further, all manufacturing processes, for example, metal working and treatment, printing, textile manufacturing, etc, are regarded under mechanical patents. Automobiles fall under mechanical patenting category, although one cannot be sure where a ‘time travel machine’, if invented, will be categorized. Of course, most mechanical engineering fields involve extensive use of computational and mathematical tools, physical laws and equations, but these fall under a different patenting category altogether.

Mechanical inventions have no constraints as they range from a simple yet effective patented invention of a four year old from Texas for “An aid for grasping round knobs” to researched and focused inventions in all areas of mechanical expertise. Few of the well known companies that have a good mechanical patent portfolio include Canon Kabushiki Kaisha with 6798 US patents, General Electric company with 6649 US patents, Xerox Corporation with 2736 US patents and Ford Motor Company, which currently has about 2671 US patents. Some inspiring patented mechanical inventions include legacy devices such as typewriters, Xerox machines to modern inventions such as biomorphic robots, everting heart valves, etc.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office currently specifies 248 major classes for mechanical patents. Each class is given a class definition, and inventions are further categorized into subclasses, where each patent application may be classified under more than one class/subclass. As exemplifications few class definitions are provided here. One class definition encompasses ‘apparatuses that produce compressive force’, another encompasses ‘apparatuses for transferring fluent materials through enclosed structures’, yet another encompasses ‘apparatuses for supplying air to, circulating air in and removing air from enclosed spaces.’

Then there are subclasses defined for each mechanical unit or component of a larger entity. This demonstrates the extent of classification accomplished by the USPTO.

The future of mechanical innovations is considerably bright, not just in the automobile industry but also in sectors like robotics, printing technology, and many more. Mechanics is used to manufacture machines; it is used by the machines, and for enabling the machines. Mechanical innovations gifted us the ease and flexibility of transportation in all forms including inland, air and sea; will aid us in rebuilding the WTC using huge construction equipment and intricate structural frameworks, to relish life with little things like toys, amusement rides, etc.

How to Find a Good Automobile Mechanic

May 13th, 2009
Levi Quinn asked:

Some people are ready to take on any task involving their car and think nothing of opening the hood at the first sign of car trouble. For the rest of us, who may be mechanically challenged or possess no interest in car repair, auto mechanics exist to do all of those things that we’d rather not do, such as oil changes and brake fluid flushing. Auto mechanics also perform highly specialized work such as tire alignment and transmission work; and even the most knowledgeable do it yourselfer will need to have their car serviced by a mechanic some day.

So how do you find a good mechanic?

There are many ways you can go about finding a trustworthy and skilled mechanic. The first thing you can do is ask friends and family who they recommend. They can give you an honest assessment of the mechanic’s skills and price level, and may even be able to get you a discount.

Another thing you can do is to visit an accredited service center. When you find a service center in the phonebook, look up their standing with the Better Business Bureau and check to see whether they are accredited by the American Automobile Association. If it’s an individual, check to see that they have an ASE certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.

Although accreditation alone does not guarantee quality or trustworthiness, it increases the likelihood of meeting a highly skilled mechanic. The process of accreditation generally keeps the level of work at a higher standard because a mechanic will want to maintain a good standing with the various organizations that he or she belongs to. Additionally, some organizations, such as the AAA, guarantee their professional member’s work for a certain amount of time; this provides protection to the consumer and guarantees that you aren’t dealing with a shady mechanic or a chop shop.

As with any other profession, there are many mechanics that overcharge and take advantage of their customers. This is why it’s important that you become familiar with your car by reading the car manual. When you to take your car to a mechanic, observe the general feel of the shop; is it organized and are there other cars being serviced or is it desolate and full of old rusty cars in the parking lot? Are there certificates on the wall? Is there a waiting area? These things can give you an idea of whether the business is legitimate and successful. Also, make sure you understand what work will be done on your car and ask about things like service warranties and hours of operation. When you get an estimate, it’s always best to get a second opinion, whether it’s from a different mechanic or from a friend or relative. It’s harder to overpay if you have an idea of what needs to be done and how much it should cost.

Finding a mechanic you trust can be the best thing you ever do because your car will likely have many issues over the course of its lifespan. It’s wise to start your search well before you have any issues with your car to ensure that you won’t be forced to take your car to a mechanic that you don’t know anything about.
